Located in Syracuse, SUNY Upstate is a State-owned academic medical center in the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Its University Hospital is a major provider of health care in the region, serving 1.5 million residents with a 409-bed, tertiary care teaching hospital, a Level-1 Trauma Center which routinely serves the most critically ill and injured, and the region’s only children’s hospital, among many other vital services.

This partnership of opportunity resulted in employment for 181 individuals with disabilities through NYSID member agencies in 2014.

SUNY Upstate recently introduced its brand new 90,000 square-foot oncology center, where a team of Preferred Source custodians from The Altamont Program-American Maintenance provide janitorial services. In addition to this new contract, this collaboration of NYSID member agency and private sector business partner has been providing janitorial services for designated Upstate Medical areas, including operating room suites, decontamination areas, assembly areas, sterilizer areas, and sterile storage areas. NYSID Preferred Source workers provide daily terminal cleaning for 36 operating rooms.

As part of SUNY Upstate’s quality assurance program, an electronic device is used to measure ATP (adenosine triphosphate) levels in each operating room following the nightly cleaning. This is a demanding and high profile job, and the custodial team has been consistently successful at providing high quality service and satisfying a very discerning customer.

NYSID enjoys partnerships with SUNY Upstate through other member agencies and corporate partners as well: Arc of Steuben for Environmental Services’ apparel, Arc of Onondaga and Human Technologies for janitorial services, and ACHIEVE/Bates Troy, Inc., Arc of Onondaga/Clarus Linen Systems and Lifetime Assistance, Inc./LAICO for laundry services.

The Albany County Airport Authority values the contributions made by individuals with disabilities and provides them with meaningful work opportunities at the Capital Region’s busiest travel hub.

Albany International Airport is a 1,200-acre facility that sees more than 110 commercial flights daily. The Airport is owned by Albany County and is occupied by the Authority under a 40-year Airport Lease Agreement with the County.

The Authority has been a longtime supporter of NYSID’s member agencies and corporate partners, creating numerous employment opportunities for New Yorkers with disabilities.

The Authority, which runs Albany International Airport, uses services from Capital area NYSID member agencies and corporate partners, including Schenectady County Chapter NYSARC, Inc., Rehabilitation Support Services (RSS), The Altamont Program Inc., and Action Window Cleaning.

Throughout the busy travel week, local residents with disabilities work at the Airport. Schenectady Arc’s horticulture team helps with plant maintenance through its Horticulture Program, which offers many opportunities to individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, volunteering at local senior centers and community gardens. The Altamont Program-Action Window Cleaning partnership provides essential glass cleaning, pressure washing, and awning and mirror cleaning in various parts of the airport, including the control tower. Altamont is also responsible for floor maintenance, from vacuuming to carpet extraction. Finally, when the airport has short-term cleanup and other janitorial projects throughout the year, RSS custodians satisfy these needs.

SUNY Upstate Medical Center and the Albany County Airport Authority were recognized as Customer of the Year Award co-recipients during NYSID’s Annual Meeting at The Saratoga Hilton in Saratoga Springs. More than 250 people attended the Annual Meeting, during which we kicked off our year-long celebration of the 40th anniversary of NYSID’s founding. Kumi Tucker, WNYT NewsChannel 13 anchor, emceed the event; the theme was “40 Years of Looking Forward.”

Thanks to everyone who joined us in recognizing the importance of a diverse New York workforce which includes Preferred Source workers at NYSID member agencies.
