Assemblymember Peoples-Stokes has long been known for her willingness to advocate for individuals with disabilities in her community. This was never more critical than in 2015 when proposed legislation would have created a substantial barrier for those who look to the Preferred Source Program for employment success.

Assemblymember Peoples-Stokes was open to sharing NYSID’s concerns toward safeguarding opportunities for Preferred Source workers.

When given all the facts and in conducting her own due diligence, she removed detrimental language from her proposed legislation, underscoring her full support of diverse Preferred Source employment and inclusive lives for New Yorkers across the state.

Upon accepting her award, Assemblymember Peoples-Stokes remarked: “I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you. I love your theme: 40 Years of Looking Forward. Where else do we go but forward. We already know how it is behind us and how difficult it was for people with disabilities, but just because you have a disability doesn’t mean you’re unable to work. It means that you could be able if you have the support systems that you need to help you get there. Thank you for providing people with opportunities to work and have fulfilling lives.”

“NYSID and its vast network of member agencies honor these champion legislators for their ongoing support of job opportunities for New Yorkers with disabilities, particularly as NYSID closes out its celebration of ’40 Years of Looking Forward’ during this milestone anniversary year,” said Ron Romano, NYSID president & CEO. “These legislators provided incredible leadership in advocating on behalf of New Yorkers with disabilities and their contributions to our statewide workforce.”

During NYSID’s Annual Meeting, individuals employed on Preferred Source contracts, not-for-profits, small businesses, New York State agencies and school districts were all recognized for their work to create jobs for New Yorkers with disabilities.

A video highlighting NYSID WORKS! events also was shown at the Annual Meeting. NYSID coordinated NYSID WORKS! in mid-September to thank New York State for creating jobs for New Yorkers with disabilities. More than 20 NYSID member agencies and corporate partners volunteered at local non-profits in need of small beautification projects across New York State.
