Although she’d been out of the workforce for many years, Denise Coston still had the desire and the potential to succeed when she was referred to Goodwill Industries of WNY, Inc. in April 2010 through its L.I.V.E.S. Project.
The L.I.V.E.S. Project offers people on public assistance with long-term disabilities the opportunity to develop the skills they need to achieve and sustain competitive employment. Launched in July 2000, the project is a collaboration among Goodwill Industries of WNY, Learning Disabled Association of WNY, ACCES-VR and the Erie County Department of Social Services. The Project has helped hundreds of individuals find employment and stay employed.
Despite her desire, Denise remained somewhat tentative for a time, uncertain about her future after so long away from work –– and she was anxious, too, about what might lie ahead.
It took a few months, but after working one-on-one with Goodwill’s Job Development staff, Denise began to warm up, and look forward with hope and anticipation.
Her fears dropped away, and she became proactive, throwing herself into her job search with such resolve that she landed a position in August as a housekeeper with Amherst/Buffalo Holiday Inn.
Management quickly recognized Denise as a valued employee. Over the past year she has taken on additional job responsibilities, including room inspector and lobby attendant. She gladly volunteers to work extra when needed.
With her strong work ethic, beautiful smile and straightforward attitude, Denise is also deservedly very popular with her colleagues and the entire hotel staff –– and a very deserving Goodwill Graduate of the Year.
Goodwill Industries of WNY, Inc. has provided individualized job training and employment programs and services to persons with disabilities and other serious vocational barriers since 1920. Goodwill activities empower and assist its clients to achieve meaningful work in a field of choice, maintain and advance in employment and reach their highest level of personal self-sufficiency.
