Celebrate National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Category: General — NYSID @ 1:36 pm

NYSID joins The Arc of the United States and Arc chapters across New York State in celebrating National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in March. We honor these individuals with disabilities who push past significant challenges to reach their potential in workplaces, schools and communities.

Richard Whaley, mail processing clerk at the Center for Disability Services’ Commercial Services, is an outspoken advocate of employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

In 2016, NYSID Preferred Source contracts statewide accounted for: 6,970 jobs created; 4,231,476 employment hours; and $60.6 million in wages across New York State. NYSID Preferred Source contracts accounted for 1,613 jobs created in the Capital Region and Hudson Valley.

NYSID’s 2016 Annual Report highlights numerous hard-working individuals and the diverse jobs they performed on Preferred Source contracts, including Richard Whaley, who works in the integrated mailroom at the Center for Disability Services’ Commercial Services.

An outspoken advocate of employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, personal independence is a motivating factor in his performance. “It really helps me support everything I want to do. I’m able to get out into the community,” he says.

He and Joseph Scorza, his fellow mail processing clerk, received special recognition at NYSID’s Annual Meeting for advocating employment opportunities and exemplifying the spirit and independence of all New Yorkers with disabilities.
