Category: General — NYSID @ 2:09 pm

NYSID presented a Battle Buddy Center plaque to Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) in Troy on Friday, March 7.

Pictured l-r: Andy Grosso, NYSID VP of business development; Col. Eric Hesse, director, New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs; Jim Haggerty, NYSID veterans’ consultant; Ron Romano, NYSID president & CEO

Among those in attendance were: Ron Romano, NYSID president & CEO; Dr. Drew Matonak, HVCC president; Col. Eric Hesse, director, and Todd Rosenfield, project manager with the New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs; Carrie Farley, founding member of HVCC’s Armed Forces Club and president of the American Gold Star Mothers, Albany Chapter; and student veteran members of HVCC’s Armed Forces Club.

Battle Buddy Centers are based on the military concept of a “Battle Buddy,” which partners members of the military to assist each other both in and out of combat.

WNYT NewsChannel 13NEWS10ABC and The Record (Troy) covered the event:

Known as the Armed Forces Study Room, HVCC’s Battle Buddy Center is dedicated in memory of Staff Sergeant Derek Farley who was killed in action in Afghanistan. His mother, Carrie, was instrumental in the opening of the Armed Forces Study Room, which serves as a home for student veterans, providing a space for quiet study where student veterans can get away from the hustle and bustle of campus.

NYSID’s Battle Buddy Centers have collectively hosted more than 3,000 visits by veterans since September 2011; HVCC alone has hosted nearly 800 veteran visits since its opening on November 15, 2012. HVCC’s Battle Buddy Center was made possible through grant funding from NYSID and support from The Altamont Program, Inc. in Schenectady.

“We recognize that creating educational and employment opportunities for service-disabled veterans and other New Yorkers who face barriers to employment is not only the right thing to do, it also improves our state’s economy and strengthens our communities,” said Ron Romano, NYSID president & CEO. “Based upon the current veteran population and the anticipated growth of veterans’ programs and services on campus, NYSID is pleased to collaborate with Hudson Valley Community College and The Altamont Program Inc. in this Battle Buddy Center and to present them with their Battle Buddy Center plaque.”

“We are continually looking for ways to support our student veterans and the opening of our Armed Forces Study Room in 2012 was a big step forward. This designation as a Battle Buddy Center reinforces that commitment and recognizes NYSID, which provided such generous support for the study room,” said Drew Matonak, HVCC president.

The Battle Buddy Center plaque is featured prominently inside NYSID’s Battle Buddy Centers across New York State. In addition to Hudson Valley Community College, NYSID has participated in the opening of Battle Buddy Centers at the following locations: Columbia-Greene Community College in Hudson; SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge; Fedcap Rehabilitation Services in New York City; and Clear Path for Veterans in Chittenango.
