National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month Continues

Category: General — NYSID @ 12:59 pm

As National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month continues, NYSID member agencies are spreading the word about the important contributions made by individuals with disabilities. “Ability at Work” is the 2014 theme, encouraging people to understand that everyone benefits when individuals with disabilities are present in local workplaces, neighborhoods and schools:

Here’s an article from The Resource Center outlining legislation proposed by NYS Senator Catharine Young (R/C/I-57) that would provide a means for sheltered workshops to transition into qualified employment centers that can continue to employ New Yorkers with developmental disabilities, while also providing tax incentives to encourage additional employment…

Services for the UnderServed (SUS) has partnered with Kingsborough Community College to give five individuals with developmental disabilities an opportunity to earn their GED. The course is taught twice a week at SUS’ 5th Avenue Day Hab program in Brooklyn by an instructor from Kingsborough Community College until mid-December, when the students will take their GED test…

James Boles, People Inc.’s president and CEO, was recently quoted in an article titled “Momentum Continues for those with Disabilities” that ran in several Bee Newspapers around Western New York. Boles also was included in Business First’s 2014 Power 250, a list of the 250 men and women who wield the most clout in the eight-county region of Western New York…

Representatives from ARC of Rockland, Jawonio, Camp Venture and the Rockland County Association for Learning Disabilities gave Senator David Carlucci (D/WFP-38) a thumbs up for Inspire New York: Bill S6631 to establish a tax incentive for businesses that hire New Yorkers with developmental disabilities. The legislation was announced during a March 10 press conference at ARC Careers in Pearl River.

Thanks to our member agencies and corporate partners for your assistance and your continued support during National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and throughout the year.
