A standing-room only crowd of nearly 250 people attended the event; the theme was “40 Years of Looking Forward,” in celebration of the 40th anniversary of NYSID’s founding.

The Heritage Centers-NYSID relationship has flourished over 30 years, creating Preferred Source jobs for Buffalo area residents in support of numerous state, county and city government customers.

More than 30 contracts for janitorial groundskeeping, snow removal, and data conversion services, along with an emblem finishing operation, are underway through Heritage Centers’ employment division, Allentown Industries, providing NYSID employment for 48 individuals in 2014.

Continuity of service and employment are the hallmarks of Heritage Centers’ recognition as the 2014 Member Agency of the Year, following the closure of another local NYSID member last year.

Rather than put people with disabilities out of jobs and interrupt service for many long-term customers, Allentown Industries took over the existing Preferred Source business to important customers such as SUNY Buffalo, the Lockport City School District and the NYS Division of Military & Naval Affairs, among others, without any lapse in service. This included a contract with the City of Buffalo Courthouse, which has been in place since 1984.

This successful transition became a springboard for the agency to grow its Preferred Source business opportunities in 2014 through eight new contracts, ensuring greater employment choices for people in its local community.
