Category: General — NYSID @ 1:32 pm

Edwardo Lopez, a porter with AHRC New York City, accepted the 2014 William B. Joslin Outstanding Performance Award as a co-recipient during NYSID’s Annual Meeting at The Saratoga Hilton in Saratoga Springs. Brent Matthew Lillard, a graphic designer with The Nicholas Center for Autism and Spectrum Designs Foundation in Port Washington, also was a co-recipient.

The Annual Meeting theme was “40 Years of Looking Forward,” in celebration of the 40th anniversary of NYSID’s founding; a standing-room only crowd of nearly 250 people attended the September 8 event.

Edwardo Lopez, or “Eddie,” as he is known to friends and family, is employed at a Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) bus station through AHRC New York City, one of NYSID’s founding member agencies. Living with his family in a Bronx shelter, he is one of only two siblings out of 11 with a job. His parents are unemployed.

Eddie was diagnosed with mental retardation at a young age and attended special education classes. When he was 19, he left school to help his family. Four other siblings have disabilities and require extra care.

He is one of the hardest-working employees at AHRC New York City’s sites. Every morning, Eddie gets up at dawn to commute from the Bronx to the Arthur Kill Bus Station MTA site on Staten Island. His one-way commute is more than two hours, but he is always on time. Although offered a job closer to home, for now he wants to be with his family in the Bronx.
