Disability Employment Awareness Takes Center Stage in October

Category: General — NYSID @ 12:00 pm

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), which raises awareness about disability employment issues and celebrates the diverse individuals with disabilities who contribute to New York’s workforce.

The theme for 2014 — “Expect. Employ. Empower.” — conveys that advancing disability employment is about much more than just hiring; it’s about creating a continuum of inclusion, and the first step on this continuum is expectation.

“NYSID celebrates the efforts of our member agencies and corporate partners to help create employment opportunities for New Yorkers with disabilities,” said Ron Romano, president & CEO. “Our recent Annual Meeting and 11th Annual Joslin Awards Program provided incredible examples of how much New York State benefits by having a workforce that is inclusive of persons with disabilities.”

How things have changed for the better since the early days of NDEAM:

1945 –– Congress enacts a law declaring the first week in October of each year “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.”

1962 –– The word “physically” is removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities.

1988 –– Congress expands the week to a month and changes the name to “National Disability Employment Awareness Month.”

2001 –– Upon its establishment, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy assumes responsibility for NDEAM and works to expand its reach and scope to this day.

Please let us know about recognition events for your Joslin Outstanding Performers, so that NYSID staff may attend. We invite you to share with us any photos of recognition events for your Joslin Outstanding Performers or other news from your organization about the diverse individuals with disabilities who contribute to New York State’s workforce.

Thank you for your assistance and your continued support during NDEAM and throughout the year.
