Session Objective:
People with disabilities are as complex and multifaceted as people without disabilities. They embody identities across race, ethnicity, age, immigrant status, religious background, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and other social identities. Often times these other identities are overlooked or misunderstood because of the heightened focus on an individual’s disability(ies). This misunderstanding or oversight can lead to other forms of bias or discrimination and impact the health and well-being of people with disabilities.
This interactive workshop will focus on how all NYSID members can engage in diversity and inclusion efforts that support NYSID’s mission of empowering people with disabilities. The training will meet the following objectives:
Distinguish the layers of diversity and develop a holistic approach to individuals with disabilities
Learn to navigate changing demographics and communities to ensure that all individuals are included
Recognize microaggressions and bias and develop strategies to address and minimize workplace impact
Develop heightened awareness of identities to avoid stereotypes and alleviate misunderstandings
