The creation of more competitive, integrated employment opportunities for people with disabilities has been the goal of recent efforts aimed at modernizing NYSID's enabling legislation under New York State Finance Law.
A bill to modernize the language was passed unanimously by both the Senate and Assembly in June. The modernized legislation is currently awaiting signature by Governor Kathy Hochul, who has clearly demonstrated a commitment to better opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
We are grateful for the solid support of bill sponsors Senator John W. Mannion, Chair of the Senate Disabilities Committee and Assemblymember Chris Burdick, Chair of the Assembly Subcommittee on Employment Opportunities for People with Disabilities.
The modernized legislation was made possible through the collective voices of NYSID, the New York Alliance for Innovation & Inclusion, The Arc New York, New York State Preferred Source Program for New Yorkers Who Are Blind, InterAgency Council of Developmental Disabilities Agencies, Inc. (IAC), New York Alliance for Developmental Disabilities (NYADD), and Cerebral Palsy Associations of New York State.
This spirit of collaboration will help ensure the continued viability of the Preferred Source Program and its impact on the employment of New Yorkers with disabilities as well as a more inclusive New York State for all.
